Biography

Katie is a first-year graduate student in WGSS. After graduating with a BA in History from Washburn University in 2017, she was a field organizer on the #Fight4HER campaign to overturn Trump’s Global Gag Rule. She returned to Kansas in 2020 and spent the next three years working on policy and training with advocates at the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. Katie’s background is in repro organizing and policy research, but she’s a historian at heart. Her undergrad thesis focused on Etta Semple, a Spiritualist/Freethinker from Katie’s hometown, who criticized her religious contemporaries and pushed the boundaries of progressive thought at the turn of the century. Katie’s current research examines abortion politics in Kansas through archetypes of belief, values, culture, and the state’s political mythology.
